The Waterloo/Kitchener corridor and nearby Guelph have four climbing gyms. A shared membership system connects three of them, making this one of the best regions in Ontario for gym variety on a single pass.
Grand River Rocks Kitchener
264 Victoria St N, Kitchener. $24 day pass.
The region's premier full-service gym. Relocated to a larger facility in June 2024 with bouldering, top-rope, lead climbing, and 32 auto-belays. Also has a spray wall, yoga studio, "Go Bananas" kids' adventure climbing area, party rooms, a gear shop, and a fitness area. Boulder walls sit at 14 to 15 ft, rope walls from 17 to 25 ft.
Dual-gym membership pricing is available with the Waterloo bouldering location. If you want roped climbing in the KW area, this is your only option.
Grand River Rocks Waterloo
80 Lodge St, Waterloo. $24 day pass.
Bouldering-only, opened December 2019 as Waterloo's first dedicated bouldering gym. Walls reach 13 ft with problems from beginner to professional. MoonBoard, campus boards, training area, gear shop, and a cafe. Hosts regular competitions: the Friday Night Boulder League, annual Brawl in the Fall, and Tour de Bloc. Crash pad rentals are available for outdoor trips.
If you are a boulderer in Waterloo and do not need ropes, this gym has a stronger social scene than the Kitchener location.
The Core Climbing (Cambridge)
500 Jamieson Pkwy, Cambridge. $24 day pass.
A 9,000 sq ft bouldering gym with Walltopia walls and a standout 90+ ft competition wall inspired by IFSC World Cup design. A middle section nicknamed "The Whale" features a top-out. System and training walls for technique work. Youth competitive teams, camps, and community events.
The Core holds shared memberships with The Guelph Grotto and Junction Climbing Centre in London. If you hold a membership at any one of these three gyms, you get access to all three. This makes The Core the gateway to a three-gym network spanning Cambridge, Guelph, and London.
The Guelph Grotto
199 Victoria Rd S, Guelph. $24 day pass.
One of Ontario's oldest climbing gyms, operating since 1994. Full-service: bouldering, top-rope, lead climbing, and auto-belays across approximately 9,600 sq ft of Walltopia climbing surface (expanded from the original smaller facility). Also offers a Kilter Board, MoonBoard, exercise area, and aerial silks.
What sets the Grotto apart: outdoor climbing trips to Rattlesnake Point and caving adventures. If you want to transition from indoor to outdoor climbing, this gym runs guided excursions.
Sensory-friendly Saturday mornings from 8 to 10 AM. Member-only early hours Monday through Friday, 6 to 11 AM.
The Shared Membership Network
Three of these four gyms connect through a shared membership system:
The Core Climbing (Cambridge) + The Guelph Grotto (Guelph) + Junction Climbing Centre (London).
Grand River Rocks operates its own dual-gym membership across its Kitchener and Waterloo locations.
Conquer Climbing Centre in Brantford (30 minutes south) also offers 50% off with a Grand River Rocks membership, giving KW climbers another option on that pass.
How to Choose
If you want ropes: Grand River Rocks Kitchener (the only roped gym in the Waterloo/Kitchener area). If you want bouldering competition: Grand River Rocks Waterloo (strongest social scene and events). If you want the three-gym network: The Core Climbing (membership includes Guelph Grotto and Junction London). If you want outdoor climbing access: The Guelph Grotto (organized trips to Rattlesnake Point).
All four gyms charge $24 per day pass.
