How to Visit All 50 Climbing Gyms in Ontario: A Road Trip Plan

Visiting all 50 climbing gyms in Ontario is doable in a series of weekend trips. The gyms span from Owen Sound in the northwest to Kingston in the east, with the heaviest concentration in the GTA. Here is how to break it into manageable routes.

Trip 1: Toronto Core (13 Gyms, 2-3 Days)

Start downtown and work outward. Day one: Ethos Climbing on the waterfront, Rock On Climbing in the Canary District, and Rock Oasis Carlaw in Leslieville. These three are within a 10-minute drive of each other. Add Joe Rockhead's in Liberty Village and Basecamp Queen West.

Day two: Basecamp Bloor West, Boulderz The Junction (both near the subway), and True North Climbing in the Downsview Hangar.

Day three: Toronto Climbing Academy in East York, Kong Climbing and Hogtown Boulders in the Don Mills area (5 minutes apart), Boulder Parc in Scarborough, and Boulderz Etobicoke.

Trip 2: GTA West and Peel (4-5 Gyms, 1 Day)

Drive a loop through Mississauga and Brampton. Start at Hub Climbing Mississauga, move to Boulderz The Cave, then Up The Bloc. Head north to Toprock Climbing in Brampton. If you have energy left, Steel Peak in Vaughan is 20 minutes north.

Trip 3: York Region and North (5 Gyms, 1 Day)

Hub Climbing Markham and RockHaus Climbing Vaughan. Then drive north on Highway 400 to Of Rock and Chalk in Newmarket and Reach Indoor Climbing in Aurora (15 minutes apart). If you are feeling ambitious, continue north to Alt Rock in Barrie (45 minutes from Newmarket).

Trip 4: Durham Region (3 Gyms, 1 Day)

Rock Oasis Ajax, Aspire Climbing Whitby, and Pinnacle Indoor Climbing Bowmanville. All three sit along the Highway 401/2 corridor east of Toronto. Start in Ajax, move east to Whitby, and finish in Bowmanville. Total drive time between gyms: about 45 minutes.

Trip 5: Burlington, Milton, Hamilton (3 Gyms, 1 Day)

Drive west on the QEW. Climber's Rock in Burlington is one of Canada's largest gyms. Continue to Aspire Climbing Milton (now bouldering-only "Aspire 2.0"). Then south to Gravity Climbing Gym Hamilton, which has Ontario's tallest walls at 50 ft. Budget extra time for Hamilton since it is worth the visit.

Trip 6: Niagara and Brantford (2 Gyms, 1 Day)

Gravity Climbing Gym Niagara in St. Catharines (bouldering-only, same owners as Hamilton). Then drive 45 minutes west to Conquer Climbing Centre in Brantford. This is a lighter day, so you could combine it with Trip 5 if you start early.

Trip 7: Waterloo, Cambridge, Guelph (4 Gyms, 1 Day)

Grand River Rocks Kitchener and Grand River Rocks Waterloo are 10 minutes apart. The Core Climbing in Cambridge is 20 minutes south. The Guelph Grotto is 30 minutes east of Cambridge. All four charge $24 per day pass.

Trip 8: London (2 Gyms, Half Day)

Junction Climbing Centre and J2 Bouldering are both in London. Junction is the full-service gym; J2 is the bouldering satellite. Same ownership, and memberships cross over.

Trip 9: Georgian Bay (3 Gyms, Weekend)

Combine this with a cottage weekend. The Climber's Crush in Owen Sound, Climbers Corner in Collingwood (near Blue Mountain), and Climb Muskoka in Bracebridge. These three are spread across a large area, so plan for full driving days between them. Collingwood to Owen Sound is about 1 hour. Collingwood to Bracebridge is about 1.5 hours.

Trip 10: Eastern Ontario (4 Gyms, Weekend)

Drive east on Highway 401. Boiler Room Belleville is the first stop (bouldering-only). Continue east to Kingston: Boiler Room Kingston (full-service) and Kingston Bouldering Cooperative. Rock and Rope Climbing Centre in Peterborough is about 2 hours northwest of Kingston. You could hit Peterborough on the way back to Toronto.

Trip 11: Ottawa/Gatineau (6 Gyms, Weekend)

A 4.5-hour drive from Toronto. Dedicate a full weekend. Day one: Coyote Rock Gym, Klimat 2.0, and Altitude Orleans (all in Ottawa proper). Day two: Cross the bridge to Gatineau for Altitude Gatineau, Bloc 9.81, and Altitude Kanata on the way back.

The Numbers

50 gyms across 11 trips. If you do one trip per month, you finish in under a year. Total day pass cost for all 50 gyms: approximately $1,175 (assuming adult pricing with no membership discounts). Total driving distance from Toronto and back for all trips: roughly 4,500 km.
